Origins
The origins of HSBC Continental Europe date back to the end of the 19th century with the creation of the Banque Suisse et Française in 1894. Its founders, Ernest Méja and Benjamin Rossier, aspired to create a bank to bridge commercial and financial activities to meet the needs of companies.
In a period favourable to the growth of the banking system and the development of industrial activities, the bank experienced rapid growth and became Crédit Commercial de France (CCF) in 1917.
The establishment of HSBC in France
On 1 April, 2000 – almost a hundred years since its creation – the bank was acquired by one of the largest financial services and banking groups in the world and CCF became the European platform of HSBC Holdings plc.
Repositioning of activities and European orientation
Following the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, the subsidiaries and activities of the European branches of HSBC Bank plc were acquired by HSBC France. In order to better reflect the nature and extent of its activities, HSBC France changed its name on December 1, 2020, to become HSBC Continental Europe and moved to a new head office at 38 avenue Kléber in Paris. On January 1, 2024, it sold its retail banking activity in France and now focuses on its wholesale activities for its strategic international clients.
